Built Around the Work, Not Just the Floor
Craftsman Hardwood Floors is an owner-led hardwood flooring company based in West Chicago. Tom Farquhar entered the hardwood flooring trade in 2009 and founded Craftsman Hardwood Floors in 2020 after years of developing his skills in high-end residential hardwood work.
Experience Came First, Then the Company
Before Craftsman Hardwood Floors had a name, Tom spent years learning the trade, working alongside experienced professionals and seeing what high-quality residential hardwood work should look like from preparation through the final finish.
That experience shaped the standard behind the business. In 2020, Tom started Craftsman Hardwood Floors with a focus on the parts of the work that homeowners actually feel throughout a project: clear communication, careful preparation, technical knowledge, dependable workmanship and attention to the details that affect how the finished floor looks and performs.
Today, that approach carries through installation, sanding and refinishing, custom hardwood layouts, buff and coat maintenance, stair work, repairs, floor leveling and related trim carpentry.
The Path to Craftsman Hardwood Floors
The business started in 2020, but the standards behind it were developed during the years before that. The work has always been about getting better at the trade and applying that knowledge directly to each home.
Entered the Hardwood Trade
Tom began working in hardwood flooring and developed hands-on experience in installation, sanding, finishing and detailed residential work.
Craftsman Was Founded
Craftsman Hardwood Floors was launched with an owner-led approach focused on quality work, professionalism and direct accountability.
Still Hands On
The company continues to work directly with homeowners on hardwood flooring, restoration, custom work, stairs and long-term floor care.
You Work With the Person Responsible for the Finished Floor
Craftsman is intentionally owner-led. Tom remains directly involved in the work instead of separating the estimate, planning and finished result between layers of salespeople and subcontracted crews.
That means the same person discussing the condition of your floor, the design direction and the technical requirements is also accountable for how the project comes together. From floor preparation and layout to stain direction, finish and final details, the goal is consistency from beginning to end.
Staying hands on also makes it easier to solve the conditions that are unique to older homes, existing hardwood, uneven transitions, repair areas and projects where new flooring needs to blend naturally with what is already there.
Hardwood Work From Installation Through Long-Term Care
The original About page described a broad range of hardwood work. That is still an important part of who Craftsman is, but the services now have dedicated pages so homeowners can understand the right process for their specific floor.

Professionalism, Quality and Customer Satisfaction
Craftsmanship
Details matter because hardwood is unforgiving. Layout, board placement, transitions, sanding, stain and finish all contribute to whether the final floor feels deliberate in the home.
Quality
Good results depend on more than appearance. Materials, preparation, equipment and the process used underneath the finished surface all matter to the life of the floor.
Customer Experience
Homeowners should understand what is happening in their home. Communication, reliability and clear expectations are part of the work, not extras added after the fact.
Real Craftsman Hardwood Work
The original About page made a point that still fits the company well: pictures can explain the work better than another paragraph. This gallery keeps that idea and gives the projects enough room to speak for themselves.
The Motivation Behind the Business
Family is Tom's biggest motivation and greatest support, and the original About page included a full gallery of those moments. Those photos belong here because they tell a different part of the Craftsman story than another flooring photo ever could.
Craftsman Hardwood Floors is a business built around work Tom takes personally. The company name, the way projects are handled and the emphasis on reputation all come back to the same idea: do work you are willing to stand behind.
That is also why the business remains deliberately hands on. Every finished floor represents a homeowner trusting Craftsman with part of their home and Tom putting his own name behind the result.
